China worries me. I wouldn’t say it gives me sleepless nights, but it really does worry me. It’s part of what i do to try and imagine what the future will look like, and the future with them in charge looks grim. For example I read/watch a fair amount of media on what’s going on in space. We’re on the cusp of going back to the final frontier and it fascinates me – from the way Elon Musk and Space Ex resemble the birth of Weyland-Yutani (the company from the Aliens franchise) to the spread of what looks to me suspiciously like the proverbial boot coming crashing down on our faces . . . again . . . and again . . . forever. That’s what China’s rulers represent. I doubt there’s a communist among them. What they are about is amassing power and wealth in their own hands. It’s George Orwell’s ‘1984’ writ large and global. They know best of course and as far as they’re concerned it’s their form of authoritarian government not our wishy washy democracies that work. We’re failed states. Think about what that means if they end up controlling the resources in space. How would we ever dislodge their gerontocracy? What’s likely to happen in our countries with them representing the world’s guiding light? America’s star is in decline; every empire has its day. But, with all its problems, it was a far more friendly regime than the sort of brainwashing stranglehold we’re going to be facing from the Far East.
