If you leave aside the patter of tiny feet what we should be getting out of life is happiness. The Americans have got it right when they say in their constitution –
‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’
But what does that mean to a kid?
It means you don’t have to break a kid with the non-stop drive to achieve academic success. It means what we should be aiming to get out of life is happiness not reaching the top of the pile.
I’m not saying be lazy. I’m saying check yourself, there’s more to life than a grade, there’s more to life than your salary and job description. If you’ve got no balance between that and your life you will make yourself ill.
I keep thinking of doctors. But there are plenty of careers where you execute your life in the pursuit of success. People say its a crime not to use your God-given abilities. Well…I don’t believe in God. There is no God. So a quest to please something that doesn’t exist seems a bit pointless doesn’t it? While a quest to put a smile on your face does have a point. Happy people make other happy people…they might even find the time to be nice to the world.
We are evolved from a primate that lived in Africa’s jungles, there is no two ways about it. Our bodies are designed to be omnivorous, and they are designed to deal with the environment it began its journey in, so are our minds. But then add time and outside influences.
Put it like this.
We are born good. You see that little bundle of joy? Its a highly evolved primate (if you find the term ‘monkey’ offensive). As a species its mind is its best weapon. The tigers and lions and other predators would have won long ago if we didn’t have the ability to develop tools, and think. Time will do something to that kid, time, and life.
The older you get you develop certain characteristics like a lizard, or maybe if you’ve managed to stay mammal like a wolf.
The upper class encourages lizard behaviour in its young and the older and richer they get the more reptilian they become. Don’t tell me that a genius level intellect isolated in a bubble of the super rich and their sycophants is human like the majority of evolved monkeys, they’re not at least, not any more.
The wolf, well that’s a pack creature. But the machine that society is dislikes packs, they cause trouble, they back each other up, and that causes problems. What society wants is isolated easily controllable and profitable (to it) lives: witness the lone wolf.
There are probably other animals you relate to, like the American Plains Indians we have kindred spirits in the animal world. It doesn’t make that not real, but it is important to remember we are a human at the end of the day no matter how much Wolf is in us, or Lizard, or…take your pick.
